One aspect of the Star Trek franchise that actors seem to enjoy most is portraying their characters' mystic powers and building on the canon that the writers create. From Spock to Deanna Troi, it's a rich history, and now, actor Zoe Steiner continues this legacy with her Betazoid character, Tarima Sadal, on Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Steiner recently told ScreenRant about how she feels playing a character with mystical abilities, noting, "You mentioned Tarima getting to use her powers. For sure, as an actor, that's such a gift and a dream come true to have such a character with such depth and a real arc that I can, like you said, sink my teeth into. I can explore her emotional landscape, and get to play with her discovering her powers."
Including characters like Tamira in Starfleet Academy adds a layer of mystery and anticipation for fans who, like Steiner, appreciate them and their capacity for growth.
Steiner's excitement over her character's potential and growing her abilities is nothing new for the Trek universe, although fans can certainly appreciate her enthusiasm. After all, Leonard Nimoy contributed many traits to Mr. Spock and Vulcan abilities and culture, including mind melds, the Vulcan neck pinch, and, most incredibly, the Vulcan salute, which has its roots in Jewish culture and real-world Judaism.
This kind of inclusion is one of the things I love most when it comes to actors who get the chance to contribute such personal things into their character's lives. When creativity meets this amazing potential for further growth in a character with abilities, the results are often beautiful!
