With season 1 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy complete, the characters find themselves in situations they never expected, especially those cadets enrolled in the War College. Zoe Steiner's Betazoid cadet Tarima Sadal, in particular, suffered massive mental and emotional trauma during a conflict with Nus Braka and the aggressive aliens called the Furies.
Raoul Bhaneja, who plays War College chancellor Zeeren Kelrec, had some thoughts about this loss and why it's one of the toughest the War College has endured to date. Bhaneja said via ScreenRant: "I think the loss of Tarima really exemplifies [the reason] she went to the War College, which is that the War College is the place that can teach her about discipline and control."
Bhaneja continued by saying:
"And I think losing her because of the terrible situation the cadets are all put in, and the sacrifice she makes to save everybody, it wouldn’t be responsible for her to be put in that situation again. And I’m pretty sure the Federation doesn’t want [the] star diplomatic daughter of Betazed to undergo any trauma like that again. So, I think Tarima was a tough one to lose."
Tarima leaving the War College, along with the deaths of Lieutenant Tomov and B'Avi, the Vulcan cadet, leaves the state of the organization facing serious instability. One has to wonder how this will affect the future of the college overall.
While a new neural device, which allows her to better control her abilities, and a transfer to Starfleet Academy were difficult for the Betazoid, Tamira's presence may eventually be a boon to Chancellor Nahla Ake — played by the brilliant Holly Hunter — and the other cadets during their upcoming sophomore year.
In the wrong hands, Tarima could be transformed into a weapon, so despite the difficult adjustments, Starfleet Academy could be the best place for her right now.
