3. Storytelling
Of course, Leon's parents and friends do their best to encourage Leon and tell him there's nothing wrong with his cooking, especially if it's for that stuck-up Syrrik!
At one point, Leon holds up a hand and says, "All right, that's enough from the comments section!" He's clearly overwhelmed himself trying to make a perfect meal, not only to prove something to Syrrik but to impress him as well. His feelings for Syrrik are changing, and he doesn't want anyone to figure that out.
After Leon clears the kitchen, his relatability as a character continues to grow through the storytelling as he has a full-on conversation with Alfie about Syrrik. It's a charming storytelling device that lets us know his true feelings and where the heart of his frustration dwells. He definitely continues to doth protest about Syrrik until Alfie inadvertently inspires him to add an all-important ingredient to his recipe--lime!
Melendez leaves us on a cliffhanger before we see Syrrik take a bite of Leon's well-prepared meal It's a writing hook that serves the storytelling well both here and in almost any Star Trek series in the past.
