1. Storytelling
Melendez has a chokehold on me with these characters, and it's no wonder. When I first began reading this series, I thought it was interesting but wasn't sure if it fit in with the franchise.
However, as the tale develops, Leon and his friends, especially Syrrik, experience concepts that are at the very heart of Star Trek: Duty vs. individuality, breaking out of perceptions held by others and rising above them, loyalty to one's friends, and recognizing the beauty of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.
While most of the storytelling in this chapter revolves around the talent show Leon and his friends are organizing, Melendez uses the event as a vehicle to remind us that Syrrik, Leon, Kenga, and Churi were friends before Jato's machinations steered his son toward being bound to duty and a career in Starfleet, and they can forgive him for that.
When they meet up in the hallway to venture to the salon together, Churi and Kenga greet Syrrik without any sarcasm or aggression and are truly impressed with Jato's son when he shows them his workup for the talent show. It's a reminder that people can change when they have a solid support system, and Melendez weaves this idea into a story that's as entertaining as it is thoughtful.
