Some fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 may not be happy that Christopher Pike's (Anson Mount) love affair with Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) is apparently over. However, executive producer and co-writer Bill Wolkoff does promise that season 4 will "open up whole new doors" for all the characters, and that includes the captain of the USS Enterprise.
Wolkoff said in an interview (per TrekMovie.com): “In season 4 we opened up new areas in the characters’ histories that we hadn’t explored yet, because — especially specifically in Pike’s story, there are certain parts of his story that we kind of put to bed with season 3. So, we got to open up whole new doors.”
Wolkoff continued by saying:
“We’re paying off some stuff that we did set up early in season 1 that we hadn’t been able to pay off, that we haven’t just from the virtue of having only 10 episodes each season. And every season we look at our world today, and we look at the kinds of stories we want to tell, and we try to see what stories we want to tell about our world today through genre that are at heart Star Trek stories.”
I'm going to miss Pike and Batel's engaging romance. However, could Sybok be hiding behind one of those “whole new doors” in season 4 of Strange New Worlds?
I strongly suspect Wolkoff isn’t talking about “paying off” the Sybok story — not yet anyway. The show teased Spock’s half-brother at the end of Strange New Worlds season 1 in episode 7, “The Serene Squall,” rather than “early in season 1.” That’s why I think the fandom has a bit longer to wait for the rebellious Vulcan to show up.
Fans only caught a glimpse of the character from behind, and Sybok was shrouded in darkness. However, since co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers has already said, “there’s a future with Sybok where we deal with Sybok,” I’m anxiously awaiting news of his arrival.
Perhaps, the new stories revolving around Pike center on his love of horses. After all, Star Trek fans see the captain of the Enterprise horseback riding in the season 1 premiere, and we've already been teased with three Yellowstone-ish images (below) from the new episodes dropping this summer.
