Star Trek meets The Walking Dead in space.
The Griffin is found after vanishing years ago in the next episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and, yes, this is the highly anticipated season 4 horror story, genre fans. Watch the preview below, courtesy of Trek’s official Instagram account, which features Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck), La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), and James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) boarding the eerie haunted house in space.
I was already ecstatic to watch Strange New Worlds episode 2, “The Griffin,” because of my love for horror films and television. However, I can hardly wait now that the new preview has revealed that Kirk, Spock, and La’an are trapped in the midst of their own Walking Dead nightmare.
Star Trek fans have certainly watched Spock open up and show his emotional, half-human side over the decades in episodes from The Original Series like “This Side of Paradise” and “All Our Yesterdays,” but I never would have imagined the character being terrified and screaming for his life like this brand-new footage reveals.
La’an’s revelation that her landing party only has 20 minutes of air left turns the "haunted house in space" motif into a race against not only the zombified crew of the Griffin, but time, too. In an interview discussing the Strange New Worlds horror episode, Wesley said (per TrekMovie.com): “Yeah, and you know, there’s horror, and then there’s psychological horror, and to me, this was very much psychological horror.”
Wesley also made an interesting remark about the derelict vessel during the same sit-down: “We have to consistently use our imaginations on Star Trek. But the ship, the Griffin, was an actual character, and the character resembled something different for each one of us […] “It felt like we were doing a small indie horror film, and it was great."
