Boldly pushing the limits of their friendship in a hilarious scene.
Spirk is alive and well in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4. Yes, the relationship between everyone’s favorite Vulcan, Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck), and the future captain of the USS Enterprise, James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) continues to evolve in the upcoming allotment of episodes. But in a new scene, Kirk is forced to slap his friend across the face!
The Kirk-Spock footage appears in a new Strange New Worlds season 4 clip posted to Star Trek’s official Instagram account, which fans can watch below, that focuses on each of the primary characters appearing in the streaming series. Under the section “James Kirk: The Future Legend,” the beloved character slaps Spock and asks, “Do you want another?” The Enterprise’s science officer quickly replies, “I do not.”
“Then let’s save this ship and our friends,” Kirk replies. Apparently, and I’m totally speculating here, Spock has let his pesky human emotions get the better of him in this scene, and his friend has to resort to "slapping" rather than simply snapping him out of whatever is holding him back.
Now, I’d like to point out this footage of the two friends doesn’t seem to sync up with the incredible Kirk and Spock scene playing out through the Strange New Worlds season 4 official trailer. Here, both officers are sporting their Starfleet uniforms and appear to be aboard the Enterprise.
In the official trailer, Kirk, who is wearing his uniform, converses with what could possibly be Future Spock, given the information we now have about the Strange New Worlds season 4 finale’s title, “Tomorrow’s Enterprise.” In that cryptic interaction between the legendary Star Trek characters, Spock tells Kirk, “I have many things I want to talk about […] I believe you are here so I can share them with you.”
However, the new footage does tie into a moment in the Strange New Worlds official trailer where Kirk does tell Spock, but in a much different tone, “Let’s save this ship and our friends” — likely a different take of the same scene.
I’m not sure what kind of trouble the crew of the Enterprise gets into, but this dynamic reminds me of the countless times Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) worked together to save the day in The Original Series.
In particular, the TOS episode “This Side of Paradise” comes to mind because Kirk and Spock only have each other to rely on while trying to retrieve over 400 Enterprise crew members from Omicron Ceti III after being infected by the ambition-dulling spores scattered across the planet.
