“When I watched it, I thought it would be great to come back.”
James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) made a new and dangerous enemy in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 and one within the higher ranks of Starfleet Command. The latest in the line of bad admirals (Badmirals) Simon Reeger, who was portrayed brilliantly by veteran actor Joe Morton, found his quest for revenge thwarted by Kirk in the episode "Orders of Magnitude." However, Morton is eager to mix it up with the future captain of the USS Enterprise and Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) again.
Morton elaborated on possibly reprising the role of Reeger after appearing in the SNW episode "Orders of Magnitude" during an interview with Inverse by saying: “Oh, I’d love to return. I mean, I say to Kirk: ‘This will happen. You'll have to take responsibility for it.’ And I say to Joseph [Dr. M’Benga], ‘I'm not going to forget you either.' So yeah, I hope I will be called back. When I watched it, I thought it would be great to come back.”
Most of Morton’s scenes are played opposite Wesley, who is equal to the task as these two talents bring their acting A games, particularly when Kirk refuses to give Reeger the codes necessary to obliterate the planet’s population of innocents just to avenge the death of his wife and kids. Morton also spoke about his Badmiral going up against a legendary Star Trek character like Kirk during the same sit-down by saying:
“Well, it reminded me that the thing about James Kirk — that we think about — is that he was always the one to break the rules. That's who James Kirk was. And so, to have scenes with Jim Kirk — George Kirk's son — was really interesting. I had to actually perpetuate the lie in front of this kid and try to make him believe that his father was not good in combat.”
Unfortunately, unless Morton is playing his return in Strange New Worlds close to the vest, the Badmiral Simon Reeger won’t be back, at least on SNW. Season 5 has long since wrapped filming. However, wouldn’t it be great to see Wesley’s Kirk and Reeger reunite in a Year One spin-off series?
Reeger returning is yet another reason, in my opinion, to continue the voyages of the Enterprise in a Strange New Worlds' follow-up featuring Wesley as Captain James T. Kirk while he embarks on his first year as the starship's commanding officer.
