A new Star Trek: Voyager game is coming out soon, and it's going right for the Alpha Quadrant and our hearts. GameXcite's indie team just released a demo for Star Trek: Voyager – Across the Unknown on Steam. It's a roguelike survival strategy game that lets players take control of the famous starship after it takes a 70,000 light-year detour into the Delta Quadrant.
The overall story is the same, except this time you get to make all the decisions. The demo starts with the events from Voyager's pilot episode, "Caretaker," and quickly shows you how to play: managing limited resources, fixing important systems, and dealing with chance encounters that could either save your crew or end them. It's apparent that actual fans worked on this project; the ship's model and interiors are so well done that they feel like a love letter to Treknology.
But this isn’t just another nostalgia trip. Across the Unknown dares to ask the big “what if?” questions (video below) the show never could. What if Captain Janeway didn’t destroy the Caretaker's array? What if diplomacy failed? What if Voyager's crew was depicted like they were in The Doctor’s infamous holonovel, Photons Be Free? Yes, imagine the USS Voyager as a warship! Other options for the vessel's ship configuration include science and even Borg builds!
Players, those alternate‑timeline possibilities are exactly what make this demo so enticing.
The demo doesn’t include a licensed or finalized musical score, meaning the background tracks and effects are likely placeholders or limited in range right now. GameXcite has confirmed that the full version will deliver enhanced music, sound effects, and perhaps even voiceovers, all of which should deepen immersion when complete.
Fans shouldn’t expect to hear Jerry Goldsmith’s iconic Voyager theme, but the final release promises a fresh audio identity to accompany the game’s alternative Delta Quadrant adventure.
That said, the experience isn’t perfect yet. The gameplay leans more on text than voice acting. For now, there’s no Kathryn Janeway barking orders, and parts of the early build feel more like a guided tour than an open mission. Still, the bones are good. The loop of upgrading your ship, managing morale, and surviving the unknown feels authentically Trek, and genuinely addictive.
As far as first impressions go, Across the Unknown doesn’t warp past its indie roots, but it absolutely nails the tone and optimism of Voyager. If the developers can deepen the systems and expand the story events, this game could easily find a permanent docking bay on every Trek fan’s Steam library.
