When it comes to the Star Trek cinematic universe featuring the original cast, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered the best and most beloved of the six films. It was a worldwide smash hit, earning over $79 million during its original release and re-releases.
Star Trek fans enjoyed the callback to “Space Seed” (S01E22), but many of them noticed one glaring error that fails to bridge the two: how did Khan recognize Chekov on Ceti Alpha V when, according to canon, Chekov wasn’t onboard Enterprise yet? While most assumed he and Khan met offscreen, which is covered in the novelization, it vexed fans for years.
A character swap to heal the timeline
To this day, many fans wonder why Sulu’s and Chekov’s roles weren’t reversed. This simple swap closes that plot hole and strengthens the timeline. Consider Sulu’s role in the film—he’s tagging along with Kirk on training missions, but why? If he were on the command track at the time, it would have made much more sense to place him on the Reliant. The first officer position would have been, if you’ll excuse the expression, a more logical career stepping stone than training cadets with Kirk and Spock.
There’s also the matter of age and experience. By the time of “Space Seed,” Sulu was a full lieutenant and the main helmsman of the Enterprise. When Chekov comes aboard “Catspaw” (S02E07), he’s 22 years old and an ensign. Sulu would have at least five years on him and a great deal more experience on the bridge.
Chekov’s roots in Starfleet security
Many fans accept the general explanation of Chekov being part of the security detail that assisted Khan and his people in settling on Ceti Alpha VI. Yes, he was young and probably hauling and unpacking gear as part of a security detail, but it’s possible he and Khan saw each other.
It seems that in between the original series and the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Chekov moved away from navigation and into the security section. This role makes sense for him, considering his background with weapons aboard Enterprise, just as Sulu’s path should have put him on the Reliant.
Star Trek fans debate this topic even today, even with the internet providing a few solid explanations about how Khan and Chekov could have interacted. What do you think? Drop by our Facebook page and start the conversation!
