In an amazing about-face Paramount has decided to drop their lawsuit against the Star Trek fan film Axanar.

ICYMI: We’ve finally got a new Star Trek Beyond trailer and this one feels a lot more like Star Trek.

After months of legal wrangling that even included an amicus brief written in Klingon Paramount has decided to drop their lawsuit against the Star Trek fan film Axanar.

According to Deadline Last night at the Star Trek Beyond fan event JJ Abrams announced that the lawsuit would be dropped.

"“This wasn’t an appropriate way to deal with the fans,” – JJ Abrams"

It sounds like Paramount and CBS felt the pressure from Star Trek fans and want to mend fences before the release of the new Star Trek series and Star Trek Beyond.  This really is a huge about face for Paramount and CBS. CBS of course wasn’t really a part of the lawsuit, but they were supporting Paramount’s efforts.

While this is good news for Axanar, we don’t know if this means Paramount and CBS are now going to open their arms to crowdfunded Star Trek fan films. It may be that Axanar’s size and massive base of support have earned it a pass and other fan films will still be asked not to proceed with crowd funding. If you were excited about seeing the Axanar fan film one day though this is fantastic news.

It appears that Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin was instrumental in making the studio change their mind.

"“A few months back there was a fan movie and this lawsuit that happened between the studio and these fans, and Justin was sort of outraged by this as a longtime fan. We started talking about it and realized this wasn’t an appropriate way to deal with the fans.”"

It looks like Justin Lin stepped up to the plate as a Star Trek fan.
