Captain Saru goes into action in this new one-shot from IDW Publishing, and they’ve provided a seven page preview to whet your appetite.
Few characters in Star Trek lore have become an instant fan favorite like everyone’s favorite Kelpien Saru. The whys will likely remain a mystery for some time, but viewers of Star Trek: Discovery have taken to Commander Saru in a big way, similar to what happened with Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Saru’s popularity has translated into the character becoming a focal point of the series, including “The Brightest Star,” a Star Trek: Short Treks of his very own. In addition, actor Doug Jones has become very in demand for Trek conventions around the world.

So it makes perfect sense that IDW Publishing would put the character front and center in their line of Star Trek: Discovery comics.
Arriving on Wednesday is Star Trek: Discovery – Captain Saru, a 48-page one-shot starring the Kelpien commander. The story takes place towards the end of the first season, when the Discovery returned from the Mirror Universe and Saru was the acting captain.
Star Trek: Discovery – Captain Saru is written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson and features art by Angel Hernandez. The whole thing is wrapped in a gorgeous Paul Shipper cover that really should be a poster.
Seriously. Can you believe that cover?
From the IDW solicitation:
"An all-new Discovery adventure that ties directly into season 1 of the hit CBS All Access show! Soon after the events on Q’onoS, the Discovery receives a distress call from someone from Tilly’s past. It’s up to Commander Saru to lead the crew against this sinister alien threat in his first mission as acting captain!"
Hopefully this won’t be the last time we get a deeper look at Saru and how he handles command. He is a fascinating character and comics may be the perfect way to explore what makes him tick. For that matter, more Discovery comics on the whole would be awesome. Are you listening IDW?
Star Trek: Discovery – Captain Saru goes on sale at comic shops and on digital devices Wednesday March 12. In addition to the regular cover it also includes a special variant done by Hernandez.
