In the latest Star Trek: Discovery promotional video, Alex Kurtzman and the cast talk about what it is that makes Jean-Luc Picard so iconic.

With the second season of Star Trek: Discovery in the books the attention of Trek Nation has pivoted 100 percent to the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series. Which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Jean-Luc Picard is easily one of the most recognizable and iconic characters Star Trek ever produced.

When it was announced Patrick Stewart would be reprising the role for a new series, there was a collective sequel of excitement from fans the world over. And ever since, those fans have waited with baited breath for every new announcement and tidbit of information about the project.

I mean, when it was revealed that the new series would in fact be called Star Trek: Picard and the logo was unveiled, it was covered everywhere.

You don’t see that kind of reaction to a logo and title reveal every day.

As if CBS needed help drumming up excitement for Picard, they have released a brand new Discovery promotional video with the cast discussing the iconic captain and what it is that makes him so darn cool.

Emperor of the Trekverse Alex Kurtzman talks about how Picard is not just a great captain, but a great example of the best humanity has to offer.

"Captain Picard in some ways is the ultimate captain, he’s the ultimate captain because of his incredible decency, because of his incredible thoughtfulness, because he was always human — fundamentally — in the choices that he made even when the pressure was really really high."

For Mary Wiseman is is all about watching an actor of Stewart’s incredible abilities at work.

"Patrick Stewart, he’s just one of our greatest living actors, it’s so cool the coming together of [his] training and old school Royal Shakespeare Company gravitas. And the combination of that and this sort of mythological franchise that is Star Trek coming together that is so special."

And for Wilson Cruz, Picard stands as an example of the type of leadership some wish we had more of in the world today.

"He never demanded respect from his crew, they gave it to him freely because of who he was and how he treated them. We root for him, and we’re willing to go on whatever ride he takes us on because of that. He, for me, was the ultimate captain, the ultimate leader. I think right now in this moment we are looking anywhere and everywhere for true signs of leadership, and I think Picard is a great model for that."

While James T. Kirk will always be the greatest captain to ever sit in the command chair to a large part of Trek’s fanbase, there is another part that will always be fans of Captain Picard. And all you need do is watch any episode of The Next Generation to understand why.

Star Trek: Picard is scheduled to arrive on CBS All Access sometime in that later half of 2019.
