What’s going on with Section 31

Section 31 was originally announced as a vehicle for Michelle Yeoh. She was going to reprise her role as Philippa Georgiou for the series, making it a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery. The series was announced in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic and since then the series has gone cold. While the series is “still alive” according to head Star Trek figure Alex Kurtzman, that isn’t exactly an encouraging statement.

Series don’t gestate for nearly three years and still get made. Especially when it’s attached to a property that isn’t well-received by the fanbase. Maybe the show can still be mad and still be good but it faces a lot of issues.

Firstly, Georgiou is working on other major properties, like the Witcher spinoff, the MCU, the Avatar sequels, and an animated series called Ark. Since a lot of shows and movies generally film around the same time, it’s very possible she ends up not having time for the product.

If that wasn’t bad enough, the writers who developed the series have since left Star Trek. Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt are now working on an exclusive contract with Netflix.

It’s very possible that without the three central figures that were involved with the series, that ViacomCBS opts not to make the show. Regardless, with the franchise developing new shows and movies, we probably will find out about the series future in 2022 as new properties and seasons are announced, or old properties are canceled.
