The future of Discovery is announced

Star Trek: Discovery may very well be bidding adieu in 2022. The show was set to film its fourth and fifth seasons back to back before the pandemic hit. It was a strategy that every show was going to do; film seasons back to back to cut costs. Star Trek’s Picard and Lower Decks did just that, and Strange New Worlds didn’t even stop filming long enough for the first season to actually air. Heck, even Prodigy is now back to work.

The only show that didn’t get back to work or film back to back so far is Discovery, giving many people the impression that this is the show’s final season. They were affected by the pandemic maybe more than any other show and the cancellation of the fifth season filming is certainly not a strong sign that things are going well.

Not only that but rumors of going over budget and the cutting of several episodes from season four’s production really doesn’t give fans very much hope about its future. It’s very possible that Discovery gets a late order for a fifth season, as we’ve seen it before but that usually comes as a final season order, and one only to fill air time.

Those aren’t situations that streaming services have any more due to the on-demand nature of their business. With all of the other Star Trek shows getting public announcements for new seasons at the start (or before) of their latest batch of episodes, it’s fair to wonder about Discovery’s future.

One way or another, by Dec. 31, 2022, we’ll know if there is a fifth season in Discovery’s future.
