Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could be a real series soon enough

A Star Trek series set at Starfleet Academy is in fact in production according to Deadline. The series was rumored to be considered a few months back, and now with Deadline saying that it’s in production gives us the idea that we will see this series in some form or another relatively soon.

The biggest hang-up is that it’s behind Section 31, the much delayed series about the shadowy-agency behind the Federation.

Gaia Violo, who’s known for her series Absentia, is apparently working on the project. Deadline is also reporting that while Section 31 has been in developmental hell for the past few years, the thought is that the show will be picked up and put into production with Michelle Yeoh attached.

It should be noted that neither Section 31 or Starfleet Academy has been picked up by Paramount+, and Stafleet Academy hasn’t even gone through the pitching process for executives. So why anyone would be this confident about the show getting greenlit is a bit surprising.

A Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series could be fun or terrible

A show about cadets at Starfleet Academy could really be a fun thing for fans. To see the mundane aspects of their lives, while also explore and expand on the training and education the cades face would be good fun. Especially if we see just how stressful and difficult it is.

What the show can’t do, what would kill it on the spot, is over-glamorize the cadets. Don’t make them them “the best of the best”, don’t steer into the tween-genius is at the adults-table trope. Don’t make them on par with seasoned Starfleet officers.

Show us what it’s like for the class of students to struggle, to show how much effort it’s needed to be just a crewmen on a Starfleet ship, let alone a bridge crew member. Don’t just shoe-horn the first-year officer into the crux of an intergalactic battle, where they and only them, could be the reason why the good guys win.

That stuff is played out.
