Fans will want to pick up Trekkies when it gets re-released in May.

Fans of a certain age may remember Denise Crosby’s iconic Trekkies documentary. The movie documented the life of several die-hard fans while covering the convention scene in what was a set of events that were little explored compared to now.

In a time when the internet wasn’t used by most people, let alone had access to it, there wasn’t this awareness fans had today. The idea of doctors, lawyers, and athletes liking these more “dorky” forms of entertainment was pretty derided. Fans of Trek were often mocked and put down due to the lack of social awareness that exists now.

Crosby took a huge step forward in highlighting the humanity in the fans, but also the fun. It’s one of the best documentaries ever made, and considering how frequent they are today, modern fans may not realize how rare and intriguing these were at the time.

So it’s great to find out that Crosby, who was once a leading actress on Star Trek: The Next Generation, will see her documentary on the fans of a show that made her an icon, will be getting a Blu-ray release in time for its 25th anniversary.

Shout! Factory will be remastering the film and updating all the things that they can thanks to modern technology. The film is set to be re-released on Blu-ray on May 24, 2022. You can pre-order it now through Amazon.

Denise Crosby added, “We can’t wait for fans of this iconic series to re-visit, or discover for the first time, how generations of fans have been brought together via their shared loved of these stories.”"

Trekkies was one of the first real looks at diehard Star Trek fans.

There are dozens of documentaries that fans should check out, a personal favorite of mine is Captains, which was hosted by William Shatner. Shatner went around and talked to various captains of the Star Trek universe to get their thoughts on the whole experience. It’s truly wonderful.

It’s just one of many though, and that’s what makes Trek so fascinating. There’s so much in the way of behind-the-scene and fan-centric documentaries that show the deeper aspect of Star Trek and while Trekkies weren’t the first Trek-centric documentary, it was the first that I can remember that told the story of fans, from the perspective of a true-blue Star Trek alumn.
