Turns out the Hollywood star is also a professional cellist.
Yes, Dermot Mulroney played in the orchestras that recorded the scores for Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond. That’s not a typo, a misstatement, or even an AI mistake. The popular actor, best known for his roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding, Young Guns, and more recently Chicago Fire, Anyone but You and Scream VI, played the cello for Into Darkness and Beyond.
Mulroney, it turns out, is a professionally trained cellist whose other movie score credits outside of Star Trek include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Mission: Impossible III and Ghost Protocol, plus Spider-man: Homecoming and Far from Home, among others. A common thread among most of those credits is the award-winning composer Michael Giacchino, who has tapped Mulroney’s talents multiple times.
Speaking to Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Mulroney said:
“So I play for him (Giacchino), it’s that orchestra. I don’t play across town in like open contract gigs. His contractor calls me. So that's why I’ve done so many, because once you’re in his orchestra, he included me with the greatest musicians in Los Angeles, which, of course, means the country, which, of course, means they'll rival with any in the world. And there I sit in that group.”
Mulroney's love for the cello can't be understated. The veteran actor even told Rosenbaum during the same sit-down that he would love to collaborate with the famed cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. Mulroney's been focusing on a piece of music perfect for a duet, but the problem is that Yo-Yo Ma probably doesn't have a clue about Mulroney's desire to perform with him.
Mulroney said: "Yo-Yo Ma doesn't know this yet, unless he's stumbled across these media mentions of mine. I've been putting it out there for about three years." Rosenbaum laughed, but Mulroney is absolutely serious about wanting to work with the musical genius.
Back on the acting front, Mulroney will voice Pennsylvania's 15th governor, Andrew Curtin, in The Gettysburg Address. The documentary will be released on Nov. 19, and the film attempts to separate fact from fiction as it pertains to President Abraham Lincoln’s legendary Civil War speech.
