1. A cloaked hitchhiker and early 'we're affecting other ships' stakes

"Unexpected" starts with Enterprise NX-01 suffering mysterious malfunctions, gravity glitches, air problems, and odd energy readings that turn out to be caused by a cloaked Xyrillian vessel riding their warp field like a parasite. That premise alone is fun: humans are new enough to the warp game that they don’t realize someone else is literally piggybacking on their drive.

Trip’s assignment to go over and help repair their engines gives us a classic “engineer as cultural ambassador” setup. It also sells the idea that pre‑Federation space is messy; ships bump into each other in ways no one has protocols for yet. On a rewatch in 2026, that feels like a useful reminder that Starfleet’s eventual shiny standards emerged from a lot of weird early encounters like this.
