John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are thinking big.
John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s new Star Trek movie is still in the early development stages, but the filmmaking team behind the Chris Pine-led Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves are thinking big about their feature film. In fact, if Goldstein and Daley have their way, their Trek will “launch a new franchise into existence."
Goldstein said in a new interview with Inverse: “I mean, look, we don't want to rely on fandom. We don't want to just hope that there's enough fans of The Original [Series] or The Next Generation or whatever who will turn out for this."
Goldstein continued by saying:
"We want to just make a great movie that lives in the world that people are familiar with — some people are familiar with — and that others will discover. And then, with good fortune, we launch a new franchise into existence.”
It’s been just over 10 years since the last of the franchise’s movies, Star Trek Beyond, opened in theaters during the summer of 2016. So, Trekkies and Trekkers like myself have been waiting forever for our beloved science fiction universe to return on the big screen.
Yes, it’s true that Goldstein and Daley’s Trek is only in the early development stages, but the writing team behind the fantastic superhero flick, Spider-Man: Homecoming, are already comparing their movie to classic films like Training Day and Crimson Tide.
I know it’s hard for the Star Trek fandom to patiently wait for what will likely be at least two more years — probably at three — before the franchise returns to the Silver Screen. However, just look what Goldstein and Daley’s Spider-Man: Homecoming did.
The filmmaking duo might not have been involved with Homecoming’s sequels, but their Spider-Man movie did what they’re hoping will happen when their Star Trek opens in theaters: launch a franchise!
