There definitely won’t be any Voyage Home vibes in the upcoming big-screen Trek.
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's upcoming Star Trek film is “not a comedy.” The writing and directing duo behind the 2023 hit film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves were tasked with helming a newTrek movie back in November 2025, and Daley also told Empire Magazine in a new interview (per TrekMovie.com) that “it’s probably our darkest film that we’ve ever written.”
“There is our sensibility in it,” Daley continued during the same sit-down. “And we do find levity, but it’s in the characters who find humor in even the darkest moments, which is just true to real life.”
“You want it to be a fun watch,” Goldstein added. “Doesn’t mean you’re laughing your head off. It just means you’re in it, and you’re enjoying it.”
Only one of Star Trek’s 13 feature films has been a full-on comedy and that's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986).
However, director Leonard Nimoy’s hilarious Voyage Home also relied on the drama of saving the Earth from total annihilation, if the crew of the Enterprise’s time-traveling hijinks back to the 20th century to bring two humpback whales forward in time failed.
While speaking to Empire, Goldstein and Daley also confirmed previous reports, which revealed their Star Trek movie is set in the future with brand-new characters. However, Daley wanted to make sure everyone understood their Trek does NOT take place in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Timeline.
“It’s tribbles. It’s all tribbles. The whole movie,” Goldstein joked to conclude their discussion with Empire.
Given the recent revelation that Goldstein and Daley’s Star Trek movie will be comparable to classic Denzel Washington flicks like Crimson Tide and Training Day, I would have been floored if I sat down in cinemas to watch what turned out to be a full-blown comedic Trek when the new film is finally released in theaters.
