“O Captain My Captain.”
Marina Sirtis, Whoopi Goldberg, and Wil Wheaton each shared the small screen with Sir Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: The Next Generation, all of whom have shared touching tributes to the late actor on social media. And fellow TNG cast member Gates McFadden posted a BTS season 1 photo of herself and Stewart as their characters Dr. Beverly Crusher and Captain Jean-Luc Picard to honor his memory with the words “O Captain, My Captain” superimposed on the image.
McFadden also wrote on the tribute, which she posted to her official Instagram account (below): “Great memories, unforgettable man. Rest in Peace.” Both Stewart and McFadden began their Star Trek journeys together on the USS Enterprise-D when The Next Generation warped its way into living rooms everywhere through television sets in 1987.
And it became clear over The Next Generation’s seven-season run that Picard and Dr. Crusher were more than just friends: they each had romantic feelings for the other. So, when the core TNG actors all reunited in season 3 of the Picard streaming series, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone to discover that the lovers had a grown child together, Jack Crusher, who was portrayed by Ed Speleers.
Picard and Crusher shared so many great episodes together over the years in The Next Generation, which focused on the duo’s powerful dynamic. The three that come to my mind right away are their heated flirtation Star Trek fans were treated to in season 1’s “The Naked Now,” plus the unforgettably intimate moments they shared together in season 4’s “Remember Me” and season 7’s “Attached.”
