Is the Spock actor actually going to double as his half-brother in Strange New Worlds?
Over the weekend, a teaser trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4’s seventh episode, “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass,” was released, which revealed the return of Lt. Spock’s (Ethan Peck) half-brother Sybok. Unfortunately, the actor portraying the illogical Vulcan couldn’t be seen in the footage, as La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong) demanded he help his wounded brother.
And after viewing the footage from “Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass,” which is Strange New Worlds’ take on soap operas, a Star Trek fan on social media logically theorized that a familiar trope will be employed: SNW actor Ethan Peck will portray both Spock and Sybok in the season 4 episode.
U/Free-Selection-3454 wrote in response to the teaser video (via the Reddit thread):
“Sybok is going to be played by Ethan Peck, isn't he? Like the soap operas of old, the long lost sibling or cousin shows up and are played by the series regular actor who has been on the show for years. It still falls under the category of stunt casting.”
As another Reddit user (I like turtles) rightly pointed out, it wouldn’t be the first time Star Trek actors pulled double duty, in terms of portraying multiple characters. William Shatner played both Captain James T. Kirk and his brother Sam Kirk in The Original Series season 1 episode “Operation – Annihilate!”
Plus, Brent Spiner, who is best known for playing Lt. Commander Data in The Next Generation, has taken on more memorable roles than Trekkies and Trekkers can shake a type-2 phaser at. From the evil brother of Data, Lore, to the charismatic father of the Augments (Dr. Arik Soong) in Star Trek: Enterprise’s fourth season, Spiner proved over the years the popular television trope is anything but dead.
I love this fan theory, and I’d wager gold-pressed latinum at Quark’s Bar on Deep Space 9 that u/Free-Selection-3454 is right, especially given how secret Strange New Worlds is being about showing Sybok’s face in the teaser trailer. Plus, SNW avoided revealing Sybok’s image in the brand-new photos that dropped earlier today (Monday, Aug. 31).
