SFA returns in March 2027 with new characters, but if you weren't at NYCC...
The wait is finally over! Trekkies, Trekkers, and new fans of the franchise were at long last treated to their first look at Starfleet Academy season 2 during this year’s Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, which fans who weren't in The Big Apple aren't privy to? Yes, you had to be at NYCC to enjoy the sneak peek, but more on that in a horrible choice by the powers that be in a moment.
The biggest news from the Stafleet Academy season 2 NYCC panel outside of the sneak peek is that Rosemarie DeWitt will portray Tarima Sadal’s (Zoe Steiner) mom. And Bill Nighy will play Nahla Ake’s “full lanthanite” father, plus Holly Hunter will pull double duty and also play her own twin sister.
My biggest criticism about the Starfleet Academy season 2 portion of the panel was that Star Trek CBS, and Paramount+ decided NOT to share the episode 1 clip shown at New York Comic Con with fans online — because why would we want to see and share in that anyway?
What a terrible way to treat devoted Star Trek fans, who simply couldn't make the trip to The Big Apple and be in the room when the sneak peek was unveiled. Shame on CBS Studios and Paramount. It was also fun — laying on the sarcasm pretty thick now — that the audio was missing when the live stream continued after the season 2 footage... for nearly three minutes. Nicely done there, too, but now back to what we do know about SFA moving forward.
Sadly, Starfleet Academy was canceled just one week after the season 1 finale, “Rubincon” dropped on Paramount+, but the new NYCC footage teases a thrilling sophomore year with consequences that reach far beyond the confines of school — if you were one of those lucky enough to see it. I’m just bummed out that there are only 10 episodes left before the unfairly criticized streaming series boldly goes into the television history books.
I also hate that Starfleet Academy season 2 won’t feature the return of Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka. However, I’m delighted that the NYCC preview confirms the return of not only Oscar-winner (Best Actress in a Leading Role | The Piano) Holly Hunter as Nahla Ake, and her twin sisiter, but also one of my favorite Star Trek characters of all time, The Doctor (Robert Picardo).
After watching the new Starfleet Academy footage, I’m also excited to continue following these two intriguing relationships, in particular, play out over the course of season 2: the love affair between Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) and Tarima Sadal (Steiner), plus Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diane) and Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) bromance, which showed glimpses of possible becoming a romance througout season 1.

Live long and prosper, Trekkies!
