Star Trek: SNW's horror episode can't scare up spot on Nielsen rankings

Strange New Worlds is 0-for-2 at making the Top 10 this year.

Strange New Worlds is 0-for-2 at making the Top 10 this year.

Sadly, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 missed out on cracking the Nielsen Streaming TV Top 10 chart overall for the second week in a row.

The Nielsen chart takes approximately a month to report its findings, and the SNW’s horror episode, “The Griffin Incident,” simply couldn’t scare up a big enough audience to earn on a spot in the rankings when the new numbers for July 27 through August 2 were published today (Friday, Aug. 28).

Likewise, Strange New Worlds season 4’s premiere, “Valles Marineris,” didn’t generate enough interest to make the Nielsen cut last week either. In fact, the only program featured on Paramount+ to earn a spot in the Top 10 was Spongebob Squarepants at No. 7. Check out the full overall ranking below, courtesy of Nielsen’s official website:

1. The Big Bang Theory (HBO MAX)

2. Bluey (Disney+)

3. The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Disney+ | Hulu)

4. House of the Dragon (HBO MAX)

5. The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare (Netflix)

6. Ransom Canyon (Netflix)

7. Spongebob Squarepants (Paramount+)

8. Ride or Die (Prime Video)

9. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (Peacock)

10. Grey's Anatomy (Hulu | Netflix)

Additionally, Strange New Worlds season 4’s second episode, “The Griffin Incident,” also failed to land on the Nielsen Streaming TV Top 10’s original and acquired content charts.

I’m not surprised that Strange New Worlds season 4’s first two episodes haven’t cracked the Nielsen Top 10 since those same installments weren’t even able to ascend to the No. 1 spot on Paramount+ on the respective days following their premieres. And I don’t know if even the Paramount Skydance Corporation/Warner Bros. Discovery merger will make any difference once the deal officially goes through.

Even with Paramount+ and HBO MAX combining and creating a larger platform to present all Star Trek’s content, I don’t know if new Trek films and series will ever be able to generate the numbers necessary to land a Top 10 spot on the Nielsen charts.

If Strange New Worlds can’t even earn Paramount+’s biggest audience when new episodes drop, how can it ever hope to garner 793 million minutes of viewed content like Spongebob Squarepants just did? And it only managed to rank near the bottom at No. 7, even with those gaudy numbers.
