The first pages of ‘Star Trek: Waypoint’ are here and they show us Captain Geordi La Forge commanding the Enterprise with a bridge crew made up of Data holograms.

ICYMI: Four ways CBS could win over Trekkies before the launch of Star Trek Discovery.

I’m very excited about IDW’s Star Trek: Waypoint because it’s going to cover territory that I’ve wanted Trek to explore. We of course have Star Trek novels that focus on the Enterprise and her crew after Star Trek: Nemesis, but I’m excited about having something visual as well.

In our first look at Waypoint we see a Captain Geordi La Forge commanding the Enterprise with a bridge crew full of Datas. Geordi explains that Data was uploaded to the Enterprise computer and can now create holograms of himself around the ship to fulfill his duties as ships computer and bridge crew. It’s an interesting take on the death of Data and how that could be worked around to continue the story of the character.

Somehow a ship full of Datas just seems less personal than one Data. It really makes Data into less of an individual. Even if this is just multiple projections of one Data in the computer it makes Data seem more mechanical and somehow less than he was.

Still I’m excited for

Star Trek: Waypoint

! Also isn’t it curious that this comic comes 25 years after the premiere of “A Fist Full of Datas?”
