The guys from Trekyards breakdown and look at Star Trek: Discovery’s title vessel and shed some light on the new design.
Since the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery hit fans have been up in arms about the design of the new ship. Most of the complaints seem to be that the ship “doesn’t look like Star Trek.” These are of course the same complaints that fans made about Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Enterprise.
Trekkies are a lot like Whovians; every time there’s a new Doctor fans complain, until it’s time for that Doctor to leave, then they can’t imagine Doctor Who without him. Fans are devoted and love the series they get into, they see change as frightening and a threat to the thing they love. So inevitably fans lash out at these new ships and Doctors.
If you take yourself out of the “it doesn’t look like Star Trek” mindset for a moment though you may find that the Discovery really does have a lot in common with the Star Trek timeline it fits into.
This is why we are going to give Discovery a chance before we make judgments. DS9 faced a lot of criticism too, and now it’s considered by many to be some of the best Star Trek of all.
